Snow last Friday (pics)

With the snow that came last Friday night, it made for a nice Saturday morning. The girls hadn’t ever seen snow deep enough to scoop up. So it made for some good snow ball fights. Here are a few pics:

This was a posed shot by a piece of tree.

Addie scooping up some snow off of a car. She thought it was fun to throw it at me, but not if I threw it at her.

Ella thought the snow was awesome until her hands turned into ice.

Ella thought it was clean enough to eat.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

I’m trying to get a new theme working on here. I’m testing two of them out. Both need some tweaking. So if things look crazy or latin shows up in different places…. Bear with me.

Yeah, yeah, I know.

I’d been doing so well at posting frequently. And for really no reason at all I’ve not posted in a week.

But lots has happened. And I think I have lots of pictures to give out as time unfolds.  But here are a few updates:

  • It snowed. It snowed a lot for Mississippi. Not quite enough to build a suitable snowman, but enough to have some snowball fights and cause some crazy traffic conditions.
  • It also snowed enough to make us cancel the Family Day @ The Clay Canvas. So we will have to reschedule that for April.
  • I preached last weekend. Because of the time change and spring break there was not a lot of folks there. Either that or they knew I was preaching. But I spoke on how Jesus saves us to live a life serving Him for now. He doesn’t just save us to wait around for Heaven to get here.
  • We have started seriously looking at building a house here in Oxford. It’s daunting. But could be great once all is said and done.
  • I got to play disc golf twice at the UM disc golf course. I have come to realize that I have some improving to do. But it was good to spend some time w/ friends throwing around some plastic.
  • A doctor’s visit tells us that things seem to be on track with the coming baby. We are about 2.5 weeks out.
  •  After is snowed it got hot. Go figure. It’ll get cold again.

That’s a week at a glance.

What should you do?

I came across this quote from Peter Marshall yesterday. I’d heard it back in September on our trip to Washington DC. Peter Marshall is the former Chaplain of the Senate in the 1940’s and pastor of New York Avenue Presbyterian.

I wonder what would happen if we all agreed to read one of the Gospels until we came to a place that told us to do something, then went out to do it, and only after we had done it, began reading again?

There are aspects of the Gospel that are puzzling and difficult to understand. But our problems are not centered around the things we don’t understand, but rather in the things we do understand, the things we could not possibly misunderstand. Our problem is not so much that we don’t know what we should do. We know perfectly well, but we don’t want to do it.

To read this seems to place some heaviness of responsibility on us, doesn’t it?  How does that quote strike you?

Doing something different?

If you were doing something different in life than what you are currently doing, what would it be?

Now I’m glad and quite happy where I am and what I’m doing. But there have been times I’ve been asked that question: “If you were not working in a church, what would you be doing?”

That’s a great question. I don’t know that I have a definitive answer for any of it. But here are some possibilities:

  1. Habitat for Humanity: Now this might be too narrow of a job. But one summer while at Mission Fest my group was working with Habitat For Humanity. We were building a house in Jackson in a neighborhood that probably isn’t the safest. And it was amazing work. I’ll admit that I’m not the handiest of handy men. But we built walls and framed windows and put up roof trusses and slung hammers all day long. And I didn’t want to quit! When I work, I really like to take breaks. But I was usually the last one wanting to quit. It was so awesome to see at the end of each day visual proof of the work done that day and knowing the impact it was making.
  2. Photographer: I actually want to jump back into it no matter. But I worked all summer after my sophomore year in high school to earn $$ to get a nice camera. Then I got a job at the local newspaper taking photos of the high schools sports in the area. I loved photography. I learned to develop my own film and print my own pictures and everything. I loved knowing that from start to finish the creation was 100% me. And when I’d take some photos to school and show people…and whey they liked it because they saw themselves or people they knew and thought it was a great photo…it made me swell up inside because they liked my work. And now that Addison has been playing soccer and some involvement still in local sports I started to get a major itch again for photography. It’s an itch that I think I’ll have to scratch soon. As a career though, I don’t know if it would be sports or portrait or photojournalism or wildlife or just a fat combination of it all. But I could see myself loving it.
  3. Work at a book store: I know it might sound lame. But it could be cool.
  4. Foreign Missions: I have always lived in Mississippi (except for the summer at Camp Ozark). And I think that getting outside of your “comfort zone” can/will stretch you in a big way. And to go international and live life missionally whether it’s actually doing “church work” or getting a secular job and serving your community by being grace and mercy just as Jesus was…it has a major draw to it. When we moved from Amory to Clinton a few years back, my mom breathed a sigh of relief that we only moved three hours away. She was thinking we might move to a different continent. And who knows, maybe we will someday.
  5. Camping Ministry: I worked each of my college summers as a camp counselor. Loved it.
  6. Film/Video maker: I’m not sure why or how, but there’s an allure there too.

Anywho, those are a few things I’d consider as possibilities if I were doing something completely different.

So..if you were to have a different job, what would you like to do/be?

Build up?

Brody brings up a good point about nearly 40 times in the Bible we are instructed to “build up” each other in some way or another. A friend of mine used to like to use the word edify a lot. But either way we, as believers and followers of Christ are implored to build each other up, to encourage, to lift, to spur them on to excellence. So here are a few build ups:

Emily Witt: Has given a couple of years (at least) of her life to go to Columbia down in South America to teach school. The crazy thing is that she didn’t take any Spanish classes in high school or college. But she’s following her heart (owned by Jesus) into making an impact in the children’s lives down there. So pray for her that she shares Jesus’ love both in and out of her classroom each day.

Scott Harrison: The guy was a night club producer or promoter in NYC, then realized he was being called to something much more meaningful and through a series of events came to start Charity:Water and is building numerous wells in Africa, bringing clean water to people who have never had it in their life. The Wife and I actually gave some water as Christmas gifts this year. He has huge goals for the impact that clean water can and will make on those communities. Pray that God is directing each of his decisions.

Drew McNeil: Is a good friend who is working with Campus Crusade for Christ over in Italy. he’s been back there for the last few months, but this is his 3rd trip there. It’s been really cool to see a passion for the lost of Italy grow in Drew. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up marring a Roman or something. Please pray for Drew that he is used by God to take the gospel of Christ into some pretty dark places there in Italy through relationships and conversations.

So go share a little love towards these people. Or at the least pray at least once today for each of them. Oh, and go give Brody a little love too.

Now we are ALL in one place

All I can say is wow.

Our goal over the weekend was to get to Clinton Thursday. Close on the house Friday morning. Pick up the 26′ Uhaul truck. Load it up. Then eat with some friends Friday night in Jacktown. And then drive home Saturday morning and unload everything into my dad’s house.

Started off well. We got there, watched LOST, closed on the house Friday (everything went SMOOTH) then went to get the truck.  It was HUGE. I was scared of driving it. And it looked to be bigger than we needed. But rather than downsizing I kept it.

We get to the house and start loading up w/ a little help from our friends. Slowly, but steadily it became increasingly more and more obvious to me: our stuff wasn’t going to fit in that (too big) truck. The Wife tried to think positively about it, but it was clear to me. Two trips would be needed.

So here’s what we did. We packed that 26′ to the gills (sorta), emptied the house and moved everything else to the garage. Then before we drove to New Albany we reserved at 17′ UHaul. The drive to New Albany was through fog so thick you could hammer a nail into it, but we made it.  Then we went to bed but I couldn’t get any sleep. Was still awake at 2am. I got up at 4:30am to drive back down to Clinton to load up the rest of our stuff.

My dad and I got it pretty easily and then it was another trip up I-55 to get back home. Once I arrived I got to unload two UHaul trucks. But somehow it all fit into my dad’s house. Although it’s tight, that means that our whole house full of stuff fit into storage space and extra bedrooms in my dad house that already had his and my stepmom’s stuff in it.

But with our “space” having our furniture in it now, it feels a little more comfortable. But we look forward to our own place soon. But are so thankful for the opportunity to save a little money in the coming months.

T Minus 9 House

If all goes as planned, then in a little more than nine hours I’ll no longer be a home owner. The closing for our house is at 8am. So there is only one more night (possibly two) in my home here in Clinton.

So tomorrow is a day of loading everything up and driving it across the state.

A lot of memories here. And it’s still a great, great place.
