Friday Five // 2.20.04

This week’s Friday Five:

When was the last time you…

1. …went to the doctor?
For me being sick? Man, it’s been forever.

2. …went to the dentist?
Last year sometime for a routine cleaning.

3. …filled your gas tank?
Today!

4. …got enough sleep?
How much is enough? I got a comfortable ammount yesterday morning.

5. …backed up your computer?
How do you do that?

Getting in shape for Snow Boarding

I assume that in four weeks I’ll wake up sore. Why? Because I would have experienced my first day on the slopes of Copper Mountain as a snowboarder. And from what I hear about it, you fall a lot you first time boarding. A heck of a lot.

I formulated a plan, and I’ve done a decent job at maintaining it so far. Not all facets have been complete. But I’ve done okay. I started a workout plan 2.5 weeks ago. I figured I’d work out for six weeks, mix in some cardio, and I’d be ready to go. I have had different times in my life when I’ve been in shape, I mean in healthy shape, but I’d begun to digress.

When I was single and carefree, I ate at odd times, I ate odd meals (does a log of cookie dough count as supper?), and I actually exercised fairly regularly. I used to think that if I could just work out with weights consistently and put on about 10 pounds of muscle, then I’d be good to go. Get pumped. Get ripped. Wouldn’t that be awesome? But my consistency with working out, and my apathy towards eating right never really worked together to give me the ripped results. Then I got married.

My wife is a great cook. And she likes to cook. And I ate every meal, every day. But of course I still tried to pack in my ‘snacks’ as before. So now I had snacks and meals instead of sometimes having snacks for a meal. And before I knew it, I actually did weigh 10 pounds more, but I’d not been running or lifting or anything. I didn’t feel like I’d gained that much weight. But the scales didn’t lie. And slowly, a half a pound here, a half a pound there, I put on 5 more.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not a fat guy. I’m not really even a big guy or “over weight”. But I do think I need to be careful about what I’m eating and all. Especially since I just crossed over the 30-year age line. But again, I’ve been consistent with working out 4 times a week over the past few weeks. I’m going to add cardio this week to build up some endurance and maybe melt a few more lbs. off. That way I’ll be able to keep up with all the other peeps I’m going to the Mountain with.

But you know what I’ve discovered….eating right doesn’t always taste as good.

The Passion Of Christ

Well, it seems that I’ll be the last to actually put something about the movie The Passion Of Christ in my blog. I’m intrigued by the movie. I first heard about it last year or so. Not really sure what it was, but that Mel Gibson was doing a movie about Jesus and wasn’t going to be in English. First thought was, “What was Mel Gibson doing a movie about Jesus for? What does he know?” (not a kind thought, I guess). I’ve seen Mel do some movies where he was everything but Christ-like. But he’s also the director/star of probably my all time favorite movie, Braveheart, so it made me think, “This could be interesting.” But my second big thought was, “Aramaic? Who the heck wants to watch a movie in Aramaic?”

You’d hear a blurb about it now and then. Gibson is finding no financial backing. Jews don’t like it. Tough times filming the movie. Lead actor struck by lightning. Pope likes it. Pope doesn’t like it. Pope’s not really conscious of what’s really going on. Yadda yadda yadda.

But then the media gets it all stirred up in a hurry. Then certain groups are invited for a special prescreening and the reviews start coming in. “Beyond Words.” “Violent and Gory.” “Magnificent.” “World Changing.” Yadda yadda yadda. The Jews don’t like it because they feel it puts the blame of Christ’s death on them. Who knows what the Pope really thinks. Most prominent Christian people seem to give the movie a thumbs up. Some disagree with it. Some think Mel denies the Holocaust (that the heck?). Yadda yadda yadda.

But I began to think about it on Monday. This will be a movie that’s talked about for a long, long time. It’s a movie that one day my kid(s) will know about and recognize as one of the most prominent movies about Jesus’ ever. I guess I’m saying, “This is gonna be big!”

We’re planning taking the Youth of our church to our local theater on March 3rd. I’ve read it’s a really violent depiction. Lots of blood and some gore. Not a “feel good” movie at all (no one wins a date w/ anyone.) I’m hoping that this can and will be a springboard for many of our youth, many of our church’s congregation, and even our community (heck, our country/world). God can use it, I believe.

The actor playing Jesus had this to say about who killed Jesus:

“The crowd standing before Pontius Pilate is not accusing an entire race for the death of Christ anymore than the heinous actions of Mussolini is condemning all Italians or the acts of Stalin condemn all Russians,” he elaborates. “Many people that are Jewish, that are brothers and sisters, have seen this film and have loved the film. I think what it will do is bring truth to the world, and when people look at themselves in the mirror at the end of the day, peace will eventually come from that.”

Dog Bites

No, we’re not talking about Bulldogs this time.

But last Saturday when The Wife and I went to Starkville to see the MSU/UM game, The Kid stayed with my grandmother. After the game The Wife and I were going out to eat before coming home. I called to check in on The Kid. I was told that Buddy, my grandmother’s dog (or semi her dog. It belongs to a cousin, but stays with my grandmother…anyway) bit her pretty good on the face. I asked how bad it was. There was a pause, then she said, “It’s not good.”

Thankfully The Kid hasn’t really shown any fears of dogs or anything. She still plays as hard as ever with our two dogs. Here are two pics that were taken the day after the bite and one this morning.

Dog Bite

I think the lip will be okay. There might be a slight scar on that cheek. But we’re keeping the tripple antibiotic ointment on it…so we’ll see.

Friday Five // 2.13.04

These Five Questions are sorta lame.

1. Are you superstitious?
Nah. It’s funny to think about sometimes, but actual superstition is bunk.

2. What extremes have you heard of someone going to in the name of superstition?
Not sure…

3. Believer or not, what’s your favorite superstition?
It’s funny to see some of the superstitions that coaches and ball players have during games.

4. Do you believe in luck? If yes, do you have a lucky number/article of clothing/ritual?
I think luck is an intangible thing. I think you can describe someone or something as being lucky. But I don’t think luck is something that is tangible…does that make sense?

5. Do you believe in astrology? Why or why not?
Um, I think it’s wrong, based on the Bible.

Holy Cow! What a game.

Last night the #6 Mississippi State Bulldogs traveled to Columbia, SC to take on Rick’s favorite Gamecocks of USC. There were many, many Bulldog fans thinking this would be the toughest game left on our schedule. I thought we would win the game, but it would be tough to do so. I wasn’t able to listen to the game because of some duties at church. But I was able to sneak out and catch the score here and there in the 2nd half.

Up 4 with 15 min left. Down 6 with 10 min left. Down 8 with 8 min left. Down 12 with just under 6 min left. I was able to start listening with 4 min left. Down about 8 or so. Then Winsome Frazier goes off and steals, rebounds, lays up, and scores a few shots. The Bowers hits a 3 to bring it back w/in 3. Then it’s nip and tuck. Then we’re down 3 with 11 seconds. Bowers takes the ball, runs up to a gamecock and pops a big time 3 in his face to tie the game.

Dogs win in OT. We’re now 20-1, 9-1 in the SEC. We might be good this year. We go to Bud Walton Arena this weekend, were we’ve never won, to take on the Arkansas Pigs.

Can we do it?

Oh, here’s a picture of Rick at the ballgame after the loss.

Gman's Seven

G.Man always has a set of questions each Friday. I already attempt to do a Friday Five (at least by weekend’s end) so I may start trying to answer them at some point midweek each week. Here’s today’s entry

1. What did you think of the Half Time show of the Super Bowl?
Even before the boobie flash, I thought it was pretty raunchy. But when you put a member of the Jackson family up there with Timberlake, what do you expect?

2. In an analogy to the Carlie Brucia case in Florida ….how long would it take for your church to find a body?
Not familar with the case….I’ll have to brush up on it.

3. What is one thing you are doing for your love on Valentines?
Can’t tell you just yet…she reads this thing too.

4. If you were speaking on love in the next few weeks; what would be your main point?
That love thinks of others before self. That it is more than a feeling. And that you cannot force it. I’d find a way to make all three of those into ONE point.

5. If your family was on Survivor; which family member would you vote off first?
My mom. She’d be having a fit for a cig and that would be pushing everyone else over the edge.

6. What TV show is one that you just can’t miss?
Either Survivor or Alias.

7. What rivalry did you think was the best this past week in Sports?
Huh? It’s gotta be MSU and UMiss, of course.

Bonus:

A. If you were a car; what type of car would you be?
A Honda Accord. Pretty basic, reliable, and with a generic classiness.

B. What part of the Bible are you currently reading?
Ephesians

The Big Three Oh

Yesterday was a big milestone in my life. I hit the 30 year mark. Sheesh. To be very, very honest it doesn’t seem that big of a deal. Don’t feel any different than 24. But The Wife kept thinking it was a big deal. She told me she’d be in charge of our youth group meeting last night “since it was my birthday” and all. I kinda wondered if she was up to something. Little things were happening the past few days that I didn’t really press for info on. I usually press for any and all details.

But I thought she’d have a cake or something at Youth that night and then it’d be a normal night. But I get there about 15 til 6 like normal..and there are tons of cars all around. Turns out the gym was full of folks! Very cool. Big cake. Lots of pictures. Lots of gag gifts. Lots of friends. Lots of support.

Just another reason The Wife is the coolest!

A Little Wager

Seems Rick from over at Rick1J13is getting pretty cocky about his Gamecocks. He thinks that since they’re ranked somewhere around #24 in the country that they can hang with the Mighty, Mighty Bulldogs (soon to be #6 in the country, I might add.) While in all honesty, I do think that this might be the most difficult game left on our schedule, I was still condifent enough to make a wager with him…non-monetary, of course.

The loser of Wednesday night’s game (that means RICK) will have to show the team logo of the opponents teams (The Bulldogs) on his blog until his team wins again. So you know that I know have more of an interest in the game than before. Sadly, it will not be on television. And I have multiple church duties on
Wednesday nights. But Rick has the game being played his own back yard (Columbia) and isnt’ sure he’s going to go. Some fan he is…heh heh.

Good luck, my friend.

The Friday Five 2.8.04

Yeah, it’s Sunday, and these aren’t the best questions for a Friday Five, but here we go anyway.

1. What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?
In highschool I walked under a big bridge that crosses over a river on the catwalk. Then a friend and I walked a few hundred yards up stream, then crossed over the TOP of the big rail road bridge there. It wasn’t that dangerous, but it could have been. I’ll tell the story later this week.

2. What one thing would you like to try that your mother/friend/significant other would never approve of?
I don’t really know of anything that The Wife wouldn’t let me attempt because of a Danger Factor. There are some crazy things that she’d say are a waste of money, though. She’d probably be right.

3. On a scale of 1-10, what’s your risk factor? (1=never take risks, 10=it’s a lifestyle)
6.5 maybe?

4. What’s the best thing that’s ever happened to you as a result of being bold/risky?
I got married to a way cool lady. That risk of rejection was heart rending. But she said “Yes” and here we are now.

5. … and what’s the worst?
Hmm….can’t think of a good answer right now.
