Innovate08 :: I hope to be there

Last year a friend went to a conference in Granger, Indiana. Yeah, Granger. Never heard of it?

Anyhow, It was called Innovate and was at Granger Community Church. I’d kept up with the church for a little while because I read the blogs of some of the staff members. It’s a great church. Very creative. Very missional. And making a big impact on their communities.

Last night I came across it again. Innovate08. I knew it was coming soon. But it had slipped my mind. And if I was to go to a conference I’d like for it to have something specifically related to my area of ministry. But when looking at Tim’s blog he mentioned how it’s possible to grab lunch w/ key staff members to pique their minds about things, and when I saw that there was a BreakOut session specifically about Small Groups…I began to really think about it.

Turns out that there’s already a group of people I know from The Orchard in Tupelo heading up there! How crazy is that? So, I’m looking through details, but I’m really hoping to make it!

Darrin Patrick

Two weeks ago I traveled to Tupelo to be a part of a church planters school. It’s a group of people who have been together for a little while, but I was able to sit in on it because it was held at our sister church. Darrin Patrick was in from St. Louis. Darrin is the pastor of The Journey, a church he started a few years ago.

He was quite interesting. Pretty conservative in his theology, but not at all in methodology and practice. I know you can’t take everything a person says and take it as “the way to do everything you do”. But he had some really interesting insights into different things.

I took notes. And here are a few things I scribbled down:

“The local church is the hope for the world”
denominationalism is decaying, but networks are rising. they need to partner together
Worships is contextualized for the areas of the city that The Journey is in. And yes, they do hymns.
They do celebratory worship at the end of the service because “they’ve met God and now respond to Him.”

People who did not grow up in church are anchorless…so they need anchoring.

Only 2% of churches reach 800 people in attendance.
Of church plants that “make it” after 3 years: the avg. attendance after 1 year is 40, 2 years is 80, and after three years is 120ish.

Who is Jesus? What did He come to do? :: Never stray away from that!
Determine what is in your closed fist and your open hand. Make sure the Truth is in your fist, and the methodologies are in your open palm.

Mobilize the church to serve the city. The goal of your church is not to put butts in the seats.

Spiritual warfare is MASSIVE upon church plants. So guard against it. And protect your family as well.
The gospel has to penetrate your heart.

To break the 150 barrier you have to be innovative.

Repackaging how you present small groups.. Are we pushing small groups as a program, or the value we seek to find in small groups (community, discipleship, belonging, serving.) Cast the vision on the Biblical value. Show them Jesus, not a program to count numbers.

People want something more than a program. They want to be able to see a holistic vision.

Don’t substitute days off for Sabbaths.
You don’t want your church to be a mission in community, but a community on mission.

Confront sin where you see it happening in your church following Matthew 18. Might have to remove membership & communion privileges.

Contextualization: Not giving people what they want. It’s giving them God’s answers – which they may not want – in forms they can comprehend.

-What are the questions of culture?

How do we clearly display Christ so that people can accurately accept or deny His claims.

VBS starts today

Vacation Bible School @ The Orchard starts up tonight. It’s out first one. We’re pumped. And I’m in some sort of skit that I still don’t really have a clue about.

The Restaurant for the Sunday Nooma

If you don’t know what the Nooma series of videos are, then this won’t make any sense. If know about Nooma, but you’ve not seen the one entitled Sunday, then it might not make much sense. But in a nutshell, they’re videos to spur discussion and conversation about spiritual matters created by Rob Bell. They are worth checking out fo sho.

But anyway, a year and a half ago John, Stevie, and I went to Grand Rapids/Grandville Michigan to attend Isn’t She Beautiful at Mars Hill. We went looking for the nearby restaurant where the Sunday Nooma was filmed. We found it. And this below is very much like the opening shot of that very video! This is at the Rainbow Grill in Grandville, MI. Snow was all around!

When we asked the servers there at the restaurant which booth he’d actually sat in when doing the video shoot, not a one of them had a clue what in the world we were talking about.

Stevie, who was videoing, is getting married this weekend in Gulfport. I think I’m going.

John Piper & the Prosperity Gospel

I first heard John Piper at Passion back in the late 90’s. He was a guy you took lots of notes, read back through them. Bought the tape (yes, tape. Not yet cd or mp3) and re-listened to his talk. Then you figured out what he was really saying and meaning. He was usually pretty deep and profound.

I came across this video a couple of weeks ago. It is pretty profound too. Yet very simple. And real. Tell me what you think about it.

Well?

Podcast!

So we’d been trying to get the message from our weekend services at The Orchard recorded for the last few weeks. But we had a few equipment issues, then some bad cords. But then I ended up buying a Tascam 144 USB Interface. You plug it into the iBook G4 and also into the soundboard. And then VOILA! Well, not voila…there were a few settings that were causing some frustrations

But then I got to work in Garageband for a while putting the pieces together, using the little intro music, recording a brief welcome message, and getting all the id3 tags right.

I’ve submitted our podast iTunes, but it will probably take a few days until it gets flying there. But we’re looking forward to this being a great way for our folks to keep up if they’re out a weekend. Also a great way for so many of our college students to listen in during the summer (or for their parents to check out where they’re going to church while away at college.)

Right now we have it set up on iWeb, so if you want to check out our first edition, go for it!

They’re Australian, so I’ll forgive them

I really, really, really like Hillsong United (myspace). They are one of those worship bands I’d heard about before, but never invested any time into checking them out until a few years ago. I was blown away. They have some really moving songs, but not just moving because of good music (which is top notch), but I think the lyrics are deep too.

They have a new project coming out, and part of the project is a new DVD. And the name of this new DVD is called All In This Together (click the pic for more info). I think my mind is poisoned now because of High School Musical. I even hear Pat use the phrase “we’re all in this together” last week in his sermon, and I immediately thought of HSM. In Pat’s defense, I don’t think he’s ever seen the movie.

But I think that I’m going to get the new double cd AND the DVD that Hillsong United is releasing. I’ve never been disappointed with their stuff.

Is your life ever a crucible?

CRUCIBLE: (krūsə-bəl) n.

  1. A vessel made of a refractory substance such as graphite or porcelain, used for melting and calcining materials at high temperatures.
  2. A severe test, as of patience or belief; a trial.

Maybe calling my current life a crucible would be an exaggeration. But it does seem that there are a whole lot of things happening at once in my life and the life of my family. And I don’t feel like I’m anywhere near any breaking point. But sometimes it does seem like my head is spinning.

We finally sold our house (Yea God!) but we’re living in a basement. But YEA GOD! the basement is free. But this basement is a 35 minute drive from work. We’ve been looking at houses over all-the-time it seems. Today we just told a builder that a house we’d been having some serious conversations about just doesn’t seem right for us. We think it is a great deal on a great house. But it’s just not a great deal for us.

And our third child is due within the next week and a half. Which means it could be in two weeks or tonight. And then yesterday the transmission went out on my vehicle. When the mechanic calls you and says you have two options…and the price difference between the two is $1100, you say “ouch!”

Then there’s the basic “I just wish I had more time in the day” stuff. So it seems that life is busy, busy, busy right now on some front. But I’m really looking forward to the weekend. We have a Good Friday service, then an egg hunt on Saturday, then a Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday. Surprisingly I’ve never been to a sunrise service in all my life.

The Weekend

So, yet another weekend is done for. Here’s a little of what took place:

  • Set up a new blog for a friend. Emily Witt is teaching school in Columbia and chasing after Jesus. Make sure you stop in and tell her hello and encourage her in her writing. You want her to write so you can read it. It’s good stuff.
  • Talked to a builder about a house he’s building in Oxford.  Building would be nice, but it would be at least a handful of months until we could move in. Ugh! We close on our Clinton house this Friday. So it’s time to start looking hard.
  • Got library cards in Oxford. So now we have a PO Box, bank account, and library cards. Are we citizens?
  • Got a membership at Blockbuster in Oxford. Later I’ll tell you how much I think I’m going to hate that Blockbuster.
  • Slept late twice. Got up early once.
  • Watched Mississippi State basketball stage an incredible last minute heroic comeback. Ben Hansbrough is the man. Totally. Oh, and Phil Turner too.  MSU has a decent shot at the Big Dance now. (Here is a nice article about Ben and his bro.)
  • Ate w/ the inlaw at Harvey’s. Not sure what I had, but it had steak, grits, onion rings, shrimp, and lots of BBQ sauce.
  • Drove to Oxford twice for church. Addison likes to go early and help with setup. Both services were good today. Got to meet some new people and reconnect with some old.

So, there it is. Now it’s time to go to bed… How was your weekend?

What kind of answers are people looking for?

I’m not a guy who orders his week around watching e.r. But pretty much every time I watch it I like it. Here is a clip that brings up some pretty deep questions. And as a minister on staff at a church…are the people involved with our church asking similar questions?

Tell me what you think…
