Like I was saying....

Crazy FTP stuff…

I was trying to update my blog and a few others to WP 2.5.1 this morning. But one of them wasn’t working correctly. Still exactly not sure what the problem with it is, but I’ve got the techies working on it  now.

But in doing so, I was cleaning up some things as well. And I ended up deleting my stats program. Like sent it to the far reaches of the internet to where I’m not sure it can be recovered. Ouch.

Sometimes I get excited about the things I can learn and do online. I am soooooooooo far behind a lot of people I know when it comes to what they can do with technology. But then again, I know plenty of people who still don’t even realize what a blog is (much less twitter) or have an email address.

Technology can be a beautiful thing. Just gotta make sure you’re using it for redeemed purposes!

It’s time to TWITTER!

[[ Come and follow me www.twitter.com/statedog ]]

LOOOONG ago I signed up for something called Twitter. I was reading about it on some blogs I visited. I checked back and the first time I ever used Twitter was on March 24 of 2007! Wow.

But basically Twitter is what I’d describe a cross between instant messaging and blogging. You can post quick updates no more than 140 characters to let people know, what you are doing! Because that’s the question you answer, “What are you doing?”

At first I was like, “Who cares?” and in the very beginning it almost seems pointless, but the trick is starting to follow people and have people follow you. [“Following” means you’re keeping up with someone’s tweets (messages they send by way of Twitter)] The video below explains it pretty well.

I started following people I “know of” through blogs and such. But once I had people I actually knew doing it, it got even more fun! So I have people who’s blogs I read like Brody Harper. He’s at the GMA’s right now and I know what’s going on backstage pretty often because of his Twitter. But then again I know Pat Ward personally, so I can keep up with his goings on too.

Is it overkill? Dunno, it’s up to you. It probably won’t seem cool right at first. But the more you do it, the more you find your people to follow, and the more you interact, the greater the experience.

Are there privacy issues? Of course, as there is with everything. Twitter was even on CSI. Watch this clip:

So, follow me on Twitter :: www.twitter.com/statedog. Sign up. Then search your address books for people you know who are already on Twitter!

Managing Online Forums by Patrick O’Keefe

As most of you know, years ago I began a message board focusing on sports in North Mississippi. I soon chose to expand it to include the entire state of Mississippi. And that’s where Mississippi Sports Talk came from.

But as I grew in my knowledge and experience of how to set up and manage an online community, I looked to help from other community administrators online. There was one guy who seemed to be quite knowledgeable and wise because of the multiple communities he ran. I was surprised to find out that he was just a teenager at the time.

But Patrick O’Keefe continued to learn and build sites and grow communities. He then began forums specifically for community admins and has even now recently written a book. I just received his book, Managing Online Forums, and read almost the whole thing in the first night. In a word, it’s great.

If I had read this book early on in my forum experiences I would have bypassed a lot of mistakes and stumbles. Patrick covers many topics from how to set up your forums, how to select your staff, how to handle security and moderation issues, and how to promote and even monetize your site. He provides sample templates for many needed documents and insight on how to interact with your users or even competitors sites.

Patrick knows his stuff. It’s quite plain to see. I have benefited from knowing him online and bouncing ideas off of him. And now I’ve benefited from reading his book. So for anyone who runs an online forum or has an interest in it, I highly recommend Managing Online Forums.

If you run an online forum, leave me a comment and share your site & what it’s about!

Build up?

Brody brings up a good point about nearly 40 times in the Bible we are instructed to “build up” each other in some way or another. A friend of mine used to like to use the word edify a lot. But either way we, as believers and followers of Christ are implored to build each other up, to encourage, to lift, to spur them on to excellence. So here are a few build ups:

Emily Witt: Has given a couple of years (at least) of her life to go to Columbia down in South America to teach school. The crazy thing is that she didn’t take any Spanish classes in high school or college. But she’s following her heart (owned by Jesus) into making an impact in the children’s lives down there. So pray for her that she shares Jesus’ love both in and out of her classroom each day.

Scott Harrison: The guy was a night club producer or promoter in NYC, then realized he was being called to something much more meaningful and through a series of events came to start Charity:Water and is building numerous wells in Africa, bringing clean water to people who have never had it in their life. The Wife and I actually gave some water as Christmas gifts this year. He has huge goals for the impact that clean water can and will make on those communities. Pray that God is directing each of his decisions.

Drew McNeil: Is a good friend who is working with Campus Crusade for Christ over in Italy. he’s been back there for the last few months, but this is his 3rd trip there. It’s been really cool to see a passion for the lost of Italy grow in Drew. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up marring a Roman or something. Please pray for Drew that he is used by God to take the gospel of Christ into some pretty dark places there in Italy through relationships and conversations.

So go share a little love towards these people. Or at the least pray at least once today for each of them. Oh, and go give Brody a little love too.

The Weekend

So, yet another weekend is done for. Here’s a little of what took place:

  • Set up a new blog for a friend. Emily Witt is teaching school in Columbia and chasing after Jesus. Make sure you stop in and tell her hello and encourage her in her writing. You want her to write so you can read it. It’s good stuff.
  • Talked to a builder about a house he’s building in Oxford.  Building would be nice, but it would be at least a handful of months until we could move in. Ugh! We close on our Clinton house this Friday. So it’s time to start looking hard.
  • Got library cards in Oxford. So now we have a PO Box, bank account, and library cards. Are we citizens?
  • Got a membership at Blockbuster in Oxford. Later I’ll tell you how much I think I’m going to hate that Blockbuster.
  • Slept late twice. Got up early once.
  • Watched Mississippi State basketball stage an incredible last minute heroic comeback. Ben Hansbrough is the man. Totally. Oh, and Phil Turner too.  MSU has a decent shot at the Big Dance now. (Here is a nice article about Ben and his bro.)
  • Ate w/ the inlaw at Harvey’s. Not sure what I had, but it had steak, grits, onion rings, shrimp, and lots of BBQ sauce.
  • Drove to Oxford twice for church. Addison likes to go early and help with setup. Both services were good today. Got to meet some new people and reconnect with some old.

So, there it is. Now it’s time to go to bed… How was your weekend?

Free WiFi in Oxford, Mississippi

When I getting ready to move here I wondered where the free wireless internet spots were here in town. I’m still ferreting some of them out, but I couldn’t find a list of them anywhere on the internet. So I started asking around and doing some of my own investigation. I’ll make a list of place I know there is free wifi. I’ll update it as more are discovered:

  • Bottletree Bakery:  Just off The Square. (map) A really eclectic, snazzy bakery with good breakfast and lunch. It was actually featured on The Food Network and Oprah because of their pies.
  • San Francisco Bread Company: Jackson Avenue (map)
  • Pak Mail: Jackson Ave (map)
  • McAllisters: University Avenue (map) The restaurant that is pretty much like all the other McAllisters, yet this one was the first one.
  • High Point Coffee: North Lamar by The Square.
  • Purple Haze: North Lamar (map) Nice little shop with culture and groovy tunes.
  • Puddin Place Bed & Breakfast: University Avenue (map)
  • Kroger: University Ave (map)
  • Comfort Inn:  Jackson Ave (map)
  • Days Inn: Jackson Ave (map)
  • Proud Larry’s: South Lamar (map). You may have to ask them for access, but they’re cool about it.

Now please double check me on these. Sometimes I’ve found a signal, but then turns out you have to pay to surf (like McDonalds).  But I may have missed some or have been mistaken about a couple. If there is a correction or addition that needs to be made, leave a comment!

Speed Test

I thought it would be cool to try out this SpeedTest.net. Now take into account that this was done late at night, but still some blinding speed for regular Comcast cable internet!

Just upgraded

I just upgraded to WordPress 2.2.

I think that’s supposed to make me post more often and some really, really interesting things.

Like Phil Collins said, “I can feel it coming in the air tonight.”

My Old Blogging Days

Last night I was going over somethings on the internet and came across some really, really old stuff. Some of my blog when I first started it back in 2003.  I was like, “Wow, four years almost.” Of course I’ve had my times to take off here and there. But it was good to go back and re-read a lot of that old stuff. Makes me wish I’d blogged more way back then so I could get a glimps of exactly what I was thinking and doing.

Also makes me wish I could recapture  some of that. I didn’t type w/ a perceived “it has to be this way so whoever will like it”. I just typed. But for some reason, I think I’ve inadvertently allowed that to happen. Like I think it’s gotta be impressive or impactful. But it doesn’t. It’s just gotta be me.

I also used to be at a different domain name. And for whatever reasons….that old domain name calls back to me sometimes. And I can’t help but think of what it might be like to move things back to statedog.com. Any value in that? Either one that is better? Or is it just ‘pick a place and make it your home!”?
